98 XJ 4x4 5 speed. Thought I had a bad seal on the back of my 231 transfer case. Bought a new seal (national oil seal) from O rileys. They had to special order it. Got a new oil slinger off the internet. It was way to tight, so I sanded it down to fit. Got it all back together and it is still leaking. I know my yoke has a little play ( can move forward and back) just a little bit. Hope my Yoke isn't broken. I don't know if that seal is a cheap brand.
I am wondering if I should try and replace the seal again or what. Someone help me. I also used petroleum jelly to lube it all up seen it on a forum.
I know I should go the JB conversion route but I know its going to cost a pretty penny. IF someone lives around fontana and can help me install one that would be of great help save me some money. Id really just like to fix the stock set up so I can drive the jeep for now.
Thank you

You should have NO fowad and back movement in the rear output shaft. That shaft is held in place by a retaining ring on both the shaft and bearing housing. If you have noticeable movement I supect you have bearing issues. Do a few searches and learn about the 231, it's a simple case with plenty of info floating around. Oh yeah, buy some assembly lube and leave the p. jelly in the bathroom where it belongs.

Thank you for that info.
Is there any one locally that has worked on a transfer case or changed to the SYE. That can maybe help me do It. Since I have no Idea what to do.
Thanx
