Default Transfer Case Identification when there isn't a tag

I just got a 1996 Cherokee and the transfer case is frozen and won't shift into four wheel drive, and needs to be replaced. I'm trying to find a used one, but the tag that should be on my transfer case has been removed.

How might one figure out which case they have without the tags?

It's a 4 Liter Automatic if it matters, and is dark green, so I suspect it may have been a former DNR vehicle up here in Michigan.

My jeep has the 2H 4H N 4L and it had a 242 in it. So that's not the best way to identify it. My haynes book has pictures of what the cases looked like

Couple options...
A: Its not a 242
B: Someone swapped it and didnt change the bezel.
C: You dont know what youre talking about.

231 Bezel:

242 Bezel:

Also you would feel another detent or "gear" while shifting through them with the 242.
