Default Which Transfer Case in a '98 XJ ?

I guess most know this already, but Haynes manuals are useless when it come to the Transfer Cases.

I have Command Track 4WD but can not tell a NP207 from a NP223. My dealer "build sheet" just says select transfer case bbut no model number.

Did these two T.C. come with a 98 XJ ? How can one tell them apart and is one case more desireable over the other ?

If it's a 98 with Command Trac, it'll be a NP231. The only options in 98 were 231 with Command Trac and 242 with Selec Trac.

Is that the same for a 97 as well? I pulled my T'mission off a 97.

you can put anything w/ anything... year, model, etc. are not the issue. its if the spline counts match up. idk the specifics but wiki actually has alot of info on xj's! i use it a lot...

I'm too lazy for that. Just type it here so I don't have to go through the hassle of using a search function.

As mentioned previously it's the 231 or 242, unless someone changed it. The transfer case is stamped with the model number right on a plate. Crawl under your jeep and take a look. That way, even if someone switched it you will know what it is.

Why not crawl under and look at the tag that is stamped on the back?

Lazy, duh. I'd rather go through life always wondering. I like to live dangerously.

I have 505 posts now. I'm officially a malfunctionin idle air control. A senior one at that.

Hey J. Wilson - ---- Thanks for the helpful information in response to my question.

I was wondering if the NP231 is stronger or more durable than the NP207 variety, would you know ?

Front Royal, one of my favorite spots in Virginia. Beginning of the Sky Line Drive and great camping along the way going South.

That would be too logical and easy.

The 231 replaced the 207, so logically the 231 is stronger.

Strength of the 207 is still debated. It features a wider chain than the regular 231 (though the 231 can be converted to a 207 style chain) but the 207 has less overall planetary gear tooth mesh than a 231. The 207 had straight-cut instead of helically cut gears in its planetary assembly.
There also never was a NP223 put in a Cherokee.

1984 - 1987 NP207 "Command-Trac" Part-Time 2.61:1
1984 - 1987 NP228 "Selec-Trac" Full-Time 2.72:1
1984 – 1987 NP229 "Selec-Trac" Full-Time 2.72:1
1987 - 2001 NP231 "Command-Trac" Part-Time 2.72:1
1987 – 2001 NP242 "Selec-Trac" Part-Time / Full-Time 2.72:1

In my initial posting I made a typo error by saying NP 223, when in fact I meant to say NP 231. My mistake !

Unfortunately, the factory tags do not stay in place for ever, so as a back up source of information, I'm availing myself of this resourse know as the "Cherokee Forum"
