That's what happens when you loan to family. Now I believe I have to pull it out measure the input shaft length and spline count to get a match. Is my thinking correct or is there something else I need to do?

The important data are tcase type, transmission type, and model year. Input spline differences are usually due to differences in the transmission and model year. 1996 also saw a different transfer case design (different rear output housing), so if you find something from 96+ with the same transmission you should be fine.

That leaves the transfer case type. Most XJs came with an NP231. If you have a Full-Time position between Part-Time and Neutral then you have the NP242, otherwise its the NP231.

It's part time and even less time right now. Looks like we can get one for around $150. Seem about right? Of course, I need to get the front shaft too.

I'm curious about what kind of shape the front pinion U-joint is in. It couldn't be too happy if the drive shaft could fall out. I'm guessing the shaft dropped, hit the road, and became a pole-vault.

Finally got around to pulling the transfer case yesterday, so what do I have besides about half of the normal one?

With that rear output housing it looks like an NP242.

Thanks. I have it in the back of my truck so I can take it to one of the salvage yards in an attempt to match it up.

The 231 and 242 have different case lengths due to the internal differential in the 242. Need a measurement?

What measurement is needed; from end to end?

231 has no "full time" position on the shifter. 242 does....then what year did the spline count change between 27 and 29 .......I think is a question.

it will be a 23 spline case.
the 27/29 spline refers to the rear axle splines.

from what i can tell, it looks like a 231, but a pic of the shifter and bezel from inside the jeep will tell us quickly.

is it auto or stick?
