I was wondering if anyone had a build thread about installing a trans temp gauge in my 98 4.0L. I am planning on putting a stroker motor in it this spring and redoing the trans and I wanted to add that. Are there any good companies that make a trans pan with a connection or something like that. Any help would be great.

You will not find a pan that has a bung (funny word) already in place for a temp probe (another funny word). Now I would like to say I used probe and bung in the same sentence, lol. Anyways back on track, You can get a weld on bung and do it yourself or you can mount a T to the trans cooler line.
Have a look at Autometer's website and you will find a lot of the little parts you may need. I would go with an electric short sweep and that should suffice.

If you're going to drop in a new motor into your XJ you'll have no problem doing a transmission temp gauge installation. I'm sure there are some write ups on this forum or over at NAXJA if you'd do a search. When I did mine, it seems like I looked at a few. You don't want to mess with the transmission pan, as stated above just T into one of the transmission lines that feed into the radiator. Use a pipe cutter and go to town. I'd avoid a hack saw. The generic instructions that come with the gauge are sufficient to be honest.
I used industrial strength velcro and attached mine to the side of the console. It looks really clean and is not that much of a stretch to see when I want an update on the temperature. To be honest, I've towed a 6'x12' enclosed utility trailer back and forth to Texas twice and never seen the temperature get in the yellow. Even in the Summer. Get a good quality tranny cooler if you don't already have one to keep things cool.

I ustilized the power of google
Never done one before but would like to install one, but that would ask the question of what should a transmission run for temp?

The gauge has white/yellow/red indicators. Mine runs around 160 whe it's fully warm in normal driving conditions. It can run closer to 190 if hot out and towing.
