My auto trans just gave out on my 88 cherokee and a friend of mine has a 90 cherokee he is parting out.

I am planning on swapping out the auto trans for the auto trans from the 90 cherokee. The transmission also comes with an np231 transfer case which i am also going to swap in. My jeep originally came with a np242 transfer case.

Is there going to be any problem when im swaping them in? Also i saw that the np231 has a sensor with vacuum lines coming from it, my np242 has an electrical plug with two wires coming from it, can i just take out my sensor from the np242 and put it in the np231?

if your staying auto to auto, it should bolt right in, I know an 89 auto will work in an 87 auto bc thats what I had in my old jeep. get the shafts and everything from the np231 jeep, they might be different idk. wiring and etc for the t case ill bet is pretty similar, basically get as much as you can from the other jeep (tcase shift linkages, wiring, tcm, etc) that way if you run into a problem you'll have the parts.

 

yea disregard my last post i saw 231 and thought you were going to the 5 speed, auto to auto will swap right over, only thing you will need to change is possibly the 4wd light switch if the donor has a vacuum disconnect front axle.

 

yeah that was my main question about the 4wd lights. My np242 has just two wires coming from the sensor and the np231 has 4 tubes coming from it. From you previous post where you swap transmissions i saw that you were able to change the sensors from one tcase to another which is what im trying to do.
