Need to throw a new trans under my XJ. How hard is it to change on these? I'm more familiar with Rangers. I'm trying to weigh the positives and negatives of fixing it up. I only payed 100 dollars for it, so I could turn a profit on it even if I don't keep it.

 

easy... and you need to figure out which tranny you have... ax15 or ba10... ba10 bolts together long ways... ax15 bolts together front to back...

 

Is there a way to tell other than crawling under it? It's kind of on a hill, so I can't jack it up safely. Not to mention it needs a few cans of raid, since yellowjackets and black wasps have made it their home. It's a 1989 Laredo 4x4 with the I6.

 

Bring the vin to a dealer and get a print out from them.

 

^^^ thats the only other way but its easier just to look under there... pretty simple to tell... look up a pic of the transmission mount on autozones website... if you have the BA10 then the pic will look nothing like this one in the pics... the mounts easier to see without crawling under there...
