Default Trans questions? 1990 XJ Crawler

Hey guys,
First time on a forum and or posting so forgive my ignorance. I’ve got a 1990 XJ 4.0 automatic trans manual transfer case. 8 1/2 long travel on 35’s with stock front and rear axles. On the way up the mountain, transfer case absolutely exploded and cracked the trans housing as well. Shot parts a 1/4 mile back. Thank god no one around when it happened. Anyway, new to the Jeep and crawling world and bought this XJ “DONE”. Looking to find a replacement trans and trans case. Found someone trying to sell me one that’s out of a 98 AWD/4x4. Says it’ll fit and the trans case as well. I’ve been doing research and hard to find as to whether or not that specific model year is compatible with mine etc. I’d welcome any and absolutely all guidance anyone could offer. Thanks in advance!!

A 1998 automatic will indeed bolt up, but will not work with the 1990 transmission computer (TCU/TCM) without some modification and/or electrical wizardry. Here's a good source for AW4 interchange info. Got a picture? It's possible the previous owner did a slip-yoke eliminator kit on the xfer case.
