Unhappy Trans problem, seems bad :S

About 2 days ago I was on my way to work and accelerating up to about 40 when I noticed that my jeep wasn't shifting into high gear for some reason, it got up to about 4k rpm then it felt almost like it slipped out of gear and revved up some more so of course I let off the pedal.. Once I coasted for a bit I pushed back in on the gas and had no luck till I was back down to 35ish mph when I accelerated then it caught and I got back up to about 45 when I happened all over again. (this was all in regular Drive gear) (it's a 4.0 auto)

I shifted into the 3rd gear position and it worked fine, but that limits my speed and is a real gas guzzler running at 3k rpm all around town..

So what do you guys think is causing this? All help is appreciated, thanks!

Check your fluid, is it dark, or smell burnt?

Youre trying to say it wont lock up, right?
Maybe you can try adjusting the TV cable and see if it does anything, It is located to the left of the throttle body.

To adjust the TV cable you:
1: Push in and hold the release button
2: While holding in release button, push "conduit" in as far as it will go
3: Release button
4: Rotate throttle to WOT, some people do this with the gas pedal. Others do it from the engine compartment.
5: Hold at WOT for a few seconds, cable should ratchet out a click or two.
6: Your TV cable should now be properly adjusted, take it for a test ride.

Here is another post about it on NAXJA
