Yep the dipstick separates about 6inches up past the pan.

Sometimes there is a lil set screw holding it in place.... sometimes there isn't

Really a pain in the rear to separate. And even more of a pain the rear end to put back together

Good luck

Default Stuck dip stick tube

My XJ had started life in the rust belt. With only 88k miles when I purchased it a month ago, the first thing I did was change the tranny fluid. The dip stick tube would NOT come off. I did get it to twist where the two pieces slide together but it wouldn't come off. Oil, solvent, twisting, nothing. I put so much downward force on it, I ripped off welded on bracket that bolts to the tranny bell housing. I ended up using a dremel to cut the tube, above the junction, to get it off the Jeep. I then stood in the pan and used a pair of vise grips to remove what was left of the top piece. A new dip stick tube from the dealer was only around $15 but they charged me around $12 for a new o-ring. The design allows water to run down the outside of the tube and into the union where it sits on top of the o-ring and rusts. When I put it back together (with a new o-ring) I put some sealant (right stuff) at the joint to keep water out.

Small tubing cutter, 1/2" rubber fuel line and 2 clamps......problem solved and should be a piece of cake next time.

After you put it together the sealant is a good idea but I also put some 3/4 heat shrink tubing over the joint.
