Default Trans doesnt kick down

Took the Jeep put the other day and noticed it doesnt kick down when acceleration is needed. After an interweb search I stumbled across a how to for the TV cable which I adjusted. It shifts fine otherwise but still wont give me the "kick down" or "passing gear". Where else should I look? 94xj, AW4 trans, 4.0.

I'm pretty sketchy here. Suppose I'd check for codes. On yours the key trick might even help.I think a faulty TPS could do that, they don't like getting wet BTW.

Thanks. Could be the TPS, took it for a mud bath right before I discovered it wasnt working.

I was sort of "fishing" for that. I very rarely suggest to anyone that they throw parts at a problem without a diagnosis, but if the TPS "took a bath" just before the problem.....On our old Renix we can check and even adjust them, probably yours could be checked, I wouldn't know.

With a 94 I might try the "key trick" (search that) IIRC, you turn the key on, then off, leaving it on the third time. Then the nag light blinks the code. Then in the "stickies" on-top of the forum they are listed in "info threads". Would be neat to see that work!

I'll try the key trick and see what it gives me. I've had it through a lot more actual water and never had an issue, but I guess it's still a possibility. The TPS can be tested with a multimeter from what I understand. I'll check further into that as well.
I needed an excuse to get under the hood anyway. Jeep has been neglected lately and it's about time for a tuneup and some lovin.

Super late reply but I hate threads like this with no closure. I went ahead and installed a new TPS and the problem persisted. Luckily I am currently taking an auto class at school so I took the Jeep in to take advantage of a free diagnostic and the use of their OBDI scanner. It seems I fudged the simple task of adjusting the TV cable so it was binding and not opening to the proper voltage. So I really dont know if the TV cable or the TPS was the culprit but it's all good now.
