Default Tranny rebuild

I feel like the bad news is coming and a tranny rebuild is on its way my way. My mom said "well it looks like your gona need to sell it now." HELL NO! I will never sell this jeep.

I plan to get a tranny somewhere and have it rebuilt or at least gone threw and beefed up a bit. What I want to know is what can be done to a stock aw4 to make it better. Wider bands or differnt material maybe etc.

also is there a better tranny(something stock and easy to find) that will swap right in and not be a pain to put in? I can take out and put in but take apart and put back together Im not so experienced.

IPT and levelten both offer hd clutch kits and beefed up trannies. One of their trannies probably costs more than a nice cherokee though. The hd clutch kits are like 500 bills. But stock aw4's are not a weak unit. Heat, fluid loss, water intrusion will kill them but other than that they will take some serious abuse. Keeping them cool is the best thing you can do. May I ask why you think you need a new tranny? I like your plan of getting another (i just got a jy aw4/242 combo for 100 bucks) and going through it. But I think you should do it. Its not as hard as you would think.

I feel like a rebuild is on its way because when I go around 55 my tranns slips from 3 to 4 to 3 and back a bunch. I did a tranns servce a year ago and I found out that the trans was not shifting into 4th prevously. Now I feel like the problem is coming back and eventually its not going to shift into 4th at all. I have checked the fluid leval running in nutral and its fine.

I plan to do another trans service and see if that helps but if not I want to be ready for the shock of needing a new tranny.

96 xj 4.0 auto country model just for the record.

I dont plan to just throw parts at this so the tranny will be the last thing I try to do. If anyone has a sudgestion as to what may be the problem or how to figure out anything I am open to them.

I would try to do a rebuild my self but I am limited on tools and space to do the work.

Dont mean to hijack the thread here but im having major tranny issues. whenever its about to shift gears ie: 1-2 it grinds horribly.as soon as its about to enter 2 it starts grinding really loud.like if it stays stuck in first and its grinding with second.i have to take of realllyyy sloooow but you can still here some kind of whining noise comeing from the tranny. so i i was reading that manual and it states that 3 (in p r n d 3 1/2) it goes from 1-2-3. so my ? is when i put it there i wasnt have many problems like when its in drive. is it ok for it to be in 3rd all the time? like when im driving city?

So I found out that I will be driving to nevada, 8 hour drive, on new years day. So I plan to do a service on my trans before the trip and see if that helps. I hope that it does. If not I will have to get my buddie to do the work because I wont take that on and feel like its done right.

What do I need for a service?

I dont mind the hyjack cuz it makes me feel like my problem is not so big a deal. Good luck with your trans though
