Default Tranny Question (not that kind!)

So I currently have a '94 XJ 2wd 5-spd, with 3" AAL. I'm going to convert to 4wd soon. I've been having trouble finding the parts. A buddy of mine is going to let me have his '96 D30 front end. But I have to find a tranny, and T-case. We found a XJ thats a 4 banger, thats toast. It's a 4-spd, with T-case. We are thinking of getting it and using it on my 4wd conversion. What do you guys think?

Will having a 4-spd instead of a 5-spd change much? I plan on putting 30"-31" tire on. and I have the cry. 8.25 rear end. I need this to stay my DD, but still want to do some mild off raoding.

Would the 4-spd change like topend speed? torque? what?

Thanks,
J

4spd auto im assuming?

It should still have decent top end but im not sure as i have never driven a stick shift cherokee. A guy I work with has one and has been asking me to drive it and tell him if his clutch is ok so maybe I'll take it for a spin tomorrow, then I could compare it to my auto tranny.

If this is a manual 4 speed it is probably a Borg Warner T4. It is a good tranny and shifts smother than all the other XJ trannys. However if you are putting it behind a 4.0L I don't think you will find a bell housing to fit it. The tranny you want for a standard tranny is the AX15 which is a 5 speed

it is a 4-spd manual. I have the AX-15 5-spd now. But I don't think I can bolt the T-case up to it, cause it's 2wd. I didn't know about the bellhouseing. Thats good to know.
Thanks,
J

You should be able to bolt up either the 231 or 242 transfer cases to the AX15 tranny. The tranfercaes bolts on in plane of the tranny tail cone. There are other parts needed but the short list is AX15 or AW4 tranny, transfercase, 2 drive shafts, front diferential axel, for 2x4 to 4x4 swap.
