Try checking out the kick down cable.

Could be several things. Maybe check trans fluid level as well.

The AW4 has a trans control unit seperate from the ECU and has reacts to the throttle position sensor, vehicle speed sensor, and the brake pedal switch. The latter only unlocks the lockup. Adjust the kickdown cable, test the voltage in and out of the TPS first.

Adjusting the kickdown cable takes a few seconds and costs you nothing. If the TPS doesn't increase in output voltage in a linear manner as the throttle is opened, its likely defective. Its easy to replace and relaively inexpensive. The VSS is on the tail shaft of the trans up to '96 and there may be 2 after 1996.

The S1 solenoid affects electronic shifting 1-2 and 3-2, but will also do some other weird things if its completely dead. S2 is the other shift solenoid that will affect shifting at least 3-OD and OD-3. S3 is the lockup solenoid.

I can tell you that if S1 is not working, your trans will not select 1st when you put it in 3 or D. Likewise, it won't electronically shift from 1 to 2 if you manually select 1-2, and the trans will not downshift from OD-2 or 3-2 if S1 is not working. It also caused my lockup to not work, or not work properly. If I manually shifted from 1-2 to 3 and then D, it might lockup and then seemingly for no reason unlock. Replacing S1 resolved my issues, but it sounds like yours is more likely the TPS.

If the kickdown cable is adjusted properly, and the TPS checks out OK or you replace it and still have a problem, reply back to this thread and we'll continue. I have the AW4 manual and AW4 troubleshooting manuals on my PC and can send them to you via email if you want them.

It very rare when it does it but it does do it just when I'm like cruising at 50 sometimes it just kicks down randomly then I give it a good amount of gas and it shifts back up lmao
