Hey CCKEN, I would appreciate it if you would post the procedures. I have access to a mutlimeter and several buddies that can assist. Sorry about the late reply, just got to work.

Below are two charts, one is the TCM connector pin out and the other is the test procedures. If you want to make the images larger, Hold the Ctrl key down while tapping the + key on your computer pad.

The TCM is located under the dash, to the right of the steering column. You'll need to remove the trim panel and knee blocker from under the steering column.

Before removing the connector from the TCM remove the battery negative post connector.

See if you can get two small safety pins to probe the TCM connector pin cavities. It's a PITA to get at the connector and is easier to insert the pins in the appropriate pin cavities you're checking and attaching the meter probes to the safety pins. #1 pin may be suitable for you.

Test procedures. Read the preliminary steps carefully. Do the resistance checks first.

My main complaint is dropping out of overdrive and some jumping around at lower speeds. Sometimes getting stuck in a high gear at stop lights. Restarting my XJ usually temporarily fixes it.

I haven't prepared a checklist for the 1996 TCM.

The most I can do right now is show you the TCM connector pin out.

Look at the pin out and procedures check list in the above post. It may give you some guidance for your checks.

Your TCM is located under the dash on the right side.

Here's a 1995 TCM pin out. I checked it against the '96 transmission wiring diagrams and they're the same CAV numbers and circuits, except I don't think you have Trans Switch Power Mode.

The resistance reading for the Trans Output Speed Sensor should read open, I believe.

Here's the pin out:

Pic of the solenoids. Note the TCM connector pins for the '96. It should say 88-96, not 88-95.

The resistance readings for the solenoids is the same as for the 97-01.

Curious, did the original poster ever figure out the issue?
