iv been trying for a few days to figure out my tranny issue...to just put this answer to rest...i am using Castrol Mercon V automatic tranny fluid...is that correct for my 92 jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0?

 

Mercon V is fine for your tranny. I personally use Dexron III but, Mercon is fine. Usually any auto tranny fluid that is approved by ChyCo says so on the back of the bottle somewhere.

 

I might be wrong...but i think you use a dex II or dex III

atleast that is what my 1994 requires.

 

Read the bottle and see if its compatable with Dexron III/Mercon.

I just changed the fluid in both of my '96s with Valvoline DexIII/Merc. Its about $4/quart here locally.

 

it says for use in ford vehicles that is what scares me, this is what dude at advanced told me told me to use when i change fluid and filter about two months ago, some of my post im having tranny trouble and wanna eliminate all before replacing tranny(found one for 150 at jy) and i figured id see if im using right fluid, just in case, it just says approved by ford for all cars and trucks that require MERCON or MERCON V, it says do not use this ATF in applications calling for MERWCON SP or type F

 

The AW4 is a Japanese made trans.

Haynes specs Mercon for the AW4, but the 1996 owners manual specs Dexron III/Mercon.

 

So my Mercon V is okay?
