Default Tranny differences????

Well I was wondering whats the differences are between the AW4 model #30-43LE and model # 40-30LE. I have read that the model 30-43Le is for 2wd and the #40-30LE is for 4wd but I have # 30-43LE In my XJ now with a np242 t case and it is a 1991 4.0 Larado 4x4. Im just dont know what is the difference between the 2. I also have a AW4 model #30-40Le with a np 231 t case on it. So the question is who knows the difference between these trannys. Thanks

I've been wandering the same thing. Here's what I found on Mopar's Tranny Program site: http://starparts.chrysler.com/starlibrary/marketing/reman/Trans.pdf
Page: 185 (page 10)

Apparently, Mopar never changed the green stamp to say 40-30LE on 4wd models, or so I figure. I would be more concerned with the Mopar part# than the Aisin Warner (Toyota) 30-43LE/40-30LE numbers. (Yes, Toyota's have the correct 30-43LE 2wd/40-30LE 4wd set up). I found out, through vendors, that Chrysler had a surplus of 1994-96 AW4's selling for $1250-1800. There are various write ups online to convert it to other year models vice 1994-1996.

I have a '97 XJ, NP231 w/ the 30-43LE Green Stamp.

BTW, vintagejeepparts.com had a sale on AW4's in June for $999.
