I'm looking at putting an ax-15 in my 95 Cherokee. The Cherokee is an automatic. It has an np242 t-case. Does anyone know if the tranny will bolt in or am i going to need to get adapter plates?

the swap is do-able even without a donor vehicle, and the ax15 will fit right between the 242 and your engine.

a quick disclaimer: while my recent experience was not exactly the same, i will relay the info i found out along the way:

you will need a 4x4/cherokee specific AX15 (+bellhousing), pedal assembly (2wd or 4wd is fine), clutch master/slave assy. (same, 2 or 4), the big Xmember-trans mount adapter plate, and a manual trans specific sensor, it's flywheel or crank, can't recall which).

you will need to modify the 242 shifter bracket that bolts to the trans/transfer from your auto trans (unless your ax15 comes with it, and if it does consider yourself lucky, they are pretty hard to get),

and shorten the lowest Xfer shifter linkage by the same amount you moved the hole in the side of the Xfer bracket,

THEN modify drive shafts, because the AX15 is right at 1.25 inches shorter than the AW4, meaning the front will be about 1.25" too long, and the rear will be 1.25 too short (best to snag a 2wd rear driveshaft from the junk yard along with the rest of the stuff above, because it cheaper and better to shorten one than it is to lengthen it)

seems like alot to take in, but when you have it all in front of you it's pretty straightforward.

make sure you crankshaft has a hole in the rear for front input shaft of new trans and a pilot bearing will need to be in stalled in here
