Default Towing an XJ

I have to tow an XJ tomorrow, and all I have available is a dolly. now, heres the problem, Its 2wd. So I cant just throw the tcase into nuetral. What are my options? I know towing a rwd can cause trans damage.

2wd with a transfer case??

Is it a bastardized FWD xj? I bet the fuel savings with FWD are through the roof!!

I'm still lost as the original post still says 2wd...

As far as a 4wd goes then I believe you would need to infact put the transfer case in neutral even with a dolly.

..how was I burned? Apparently the mobil version of CF is hiding something from me?

Edit: I see where I missed 'I can't' where I mistook 'can't I'. But regardless why does it matter? 4wd with tcase in N or 2wd with no tcase... the rear wheels are the only one spinning. Take out the drive shaft unless the rear seal with leak without it.

when towing a 4wd on a dolly, most guys take drive shafts out in case the t case slips out of neutral. Its like all of 4 bolts and isnt hard to do. Im not sure what the OP's confused about?

If it's an auto trans pull the drive shaft, the pump for the auto is located on the input side so if you leave the shaft in the transmission will rotate without fluid being pumped through it (basically running dry) which can cause excess wear/ damage.

If it is a manual transmission you can just put it in Neutral (since the gears are bathed in oil unlike an auto).

Its an auto, I was hoping to refrain from pulling the driveshaft incas I have to move it, how is th drivshaft on a 2wd? is it just 4 bolts on the diff then pull the yoke out? will that allow it to lak fluid out, or no?

How far and how fast are you towing it? Stick or auto? could you put the rear end on the dolly?

Yes, just 4 bolts and pull the yoke. Some fluid may leak out but since the trans won't be turning it won't actively be pumping it out, so only what's above the above the output shaft will leak (how much depends on what angle it is at. You can buy a plus specifically to block off the output shaft or use a plastic bag / rubber glove and duct tape it over the output housing.

Harbor Freight sells the plugs for $2 if you have one nearby:
http://www.harborfreight.com/transmi...ool-98060.html

most auto parts stores should also carry them.

I would also recommend taping (I'd recommend masking tape for easy removal when you put it back together) the "loose" u-joint caps (the ones that were held by the bolt on straps that were removed) to the joint/shaft so you don't loose them.

You could always just unbolt the driveshaft at the diff, duct tape the u-joint together, support and tie forward the driveshaft for an easy hook-up later.

Pull the driveshaft, no reason not to really.
