I tow a 460 lb aluminum trailer with both my quads on it and it tows great, though it doesnt weigh much....around 1200-1300 lbs or so loaded up. Never towed much more weight then that with an XJ. On recovery, cherokees work fine, pending on the size of the stranded rig and the recovery points on your XJ.

I have never pulled a loaded trailer with my XJ, but I have pulled out a buried 2500 Silverado. They can hold their own, especially if set up correctly, as previously stated.

I towed 2000 pounds with my old Cherokee all the time
the only thing that suffered from it was the leaf springs really sag

I've found that many people who don't own XJ's underestimate them. Now I don't know who you were talking to, of course, but I hardly pay attention to people when they dog jeeps. Tons of people look at the XJ's smaller size like it is a failure of some kind and don't realize that it is actually a strength. I have been nothing short of impressed by my 96 and have found myself driving in 2wd in conditions I would have easily expected the rear wheel drive to get hung up. GO JEEP.

I have had no problems with my XJ. I tow a small boat and a 12 foot trailer loaded with fourwheelers and dirtbikes, never had any problems. I do down ship to third alot but that was expected. The only real problem i have with towing is the stoping part but aslond as you look ahead and prepare for the stop you should be fine.

The only thing you have to watch out for is tire size. I could clear 35's but when i load up the trailer My XJ tends to squat alot so i am staying with 33's

If you do tow I highly recommend trailer brakes. I will never tow without them. Too many stupid people have made me really have to use them.

The only reason i don't have trailer brakes is because none of the trailers i haul have trailer brakes on them.

I was making a point to the poster of the thread about trailer brakes using your post.....you can always put them on your trailer which would be smart.
