I just bought a 1998 GMC Yukon 1500. I plan on Flat Towing my 99 XJ with it for now up to Rausch Creek every month or so. Rausch is about 200 miles from home. Does anyone flat tow their XJ? if so how did you hook it up to the truck? What do you all use for towing?
And I was up at Rausch 2 months ago and by buddy blew his clutch in his 81 CJ7 so I had to flat tow him home in my XJ, couldnt go over 45 mph or the truck was all over the road, was a disaster.
Thanks,
Mike

Use a tow-bar. http://www.shopping.com/-jeep+tow+bars
Put the t-case in Neutral, the trans in Park, and leave the ignition unlocked but off. And don't forget the safety chains, and lights.

I just returned a week ago from a trip to Moab and then to Texas and back from Washington state. I flat towed my 88 xj 7,840 miles at 60-70, mostly 70 behind a motorhome. Towed great and I gould not even tell it was there. Mine is standard, guys here on the site said to put T-case in neutrel and tranny in second and that worked . Have not had and problems. I used a tow bar for a motorhome that doe's not have a ball hitch, it has a swivel that gives it a lot of travel up and down, due to the length from my motorhome rear axle to the hitch (about 10 feet). Towing from your vehicle I'm sure you could use a standard ball type tow bar.

If the t-case is in neutral the gears in the trans wouldn't be turning anyway, regardless of what gear the manual trans is in. Or am I not looking at the obvious?

I understand putting the t case in Neutral and the tranny in park chaining it up and everything its just i am curious to how you all think the yukon is gonna handle it. I should prolly hit up a chevy forum but Jeep people are always more helpful
Also how should i hook up the tow bar, i have the stock bumper with the waag brush guard. This exactly http://www.everythingsuv.com/waag_br...rokee-esuv.asp I also have tow hooks that i was thinking i could hook it up to but the brush guard is in the way. Ill have to take some pics to show but any idead would be great
Thanks again

I've towed with a suburban and a tahoe/yukon. the tahoe seems to handle the weight better and has better steerability.
Keep the Yukon out of overdrive unless you have the tow/haul button.
The TC is lubricated when the rear output shaft spins. Most transmissions are lubricated when the input shaft spins. therefore TC in neutral and transmission locked

The advice given to me was put the transmission in gear, TC in neutral. The consensus on the site was to use 2ed, I don't know why 2ed, I guess you could use any gear, 2ed was as good as any and it has worked for 8,000+ tow miles.
