I think you need brackets for the tow bar to mount to. Not positive though. You need something to connect it to.

you do need brackets, usually they come with the tow bar.
basicaly your vehicule becomes a trailer.
I'm not sure, but you probably have to lock the steering.
just look at RV campers how they tow their other vehicles
if your not sure, do a quick search on the net or go see a reputable store who sells and installs hitches they will have all the right answers, just be sure to fill us in afterwards.

i've used an old u-haul towbar and it works great but i had to take the grill and other junk out of the jeep to get to the top of the front bumper.

I use a Blue Ox baseplate. It's a permanent addition to my XJ, so I can flat tow it behind my motorhome.

You actually leave the key in the ignition and turn it to the first click to unlock the steering, so it can properly track behind you as you turn. Otherwise, you'd be dragging the front end around corners. Also, you put the transfer case in neutral and transmission in park for an automatic or 2nd gear for a manual.

The XJ makes a great tow behind vehicle, and I love taking it on trips to the beach. It's light and the baseplate install is really easy.
