Default tow hooks

pulled a set of tow hooks at the jy today. they came off a 1996 or older jeep xj. will these work on my 1998 xj?

they dont look like any hooks i've seen. are they stock or aftermarket? the plate is about 3/8th's of an inch thick.

Yeah, never seen those brackets before, looks like someone mightve made them. They look like they'd go in between the bumper brackets and frame, so the plate would be at an angle, the hooks would be parallel(ish) to the ground. Should work on any XJ, probably have to adjust/bend the bumper mounts though.

they were sandwiched between frame and the bumper. and they did sit parallel with the ground. only cost $10 for the pair. i'm not into hardcore mudding, but i do need a solidish mount to pull things from time to time.

I personally wouldn't trust the three bumper bolts to hold up to a good yank. They probably could, but it'd be safer to us factory brackets that tie into that fourth bolt hole further back along the frame rail.

Mind you, I am a paranoid S.O.B.

The OEM bracket also have plates that tie into the front of the "frame" rails, right behind the bumper. There's also a bracket that ties into the bottom of the rail. Personally I wouldn't trust those. All it takes is a mud hole with some roots through it that you get hung up on and you can do some serious damage trying to yank yourself out.
