steering knuckle to tie rod ends .. replaced boots only, tie rod ends dont look too old, or worn out
Whats proper torque on castle nut?
repair book is too jumbled with years/models/grands .. what I found was 55 lbs for the boots
did drivers side today / bought torque ratchet (autocraft, not the best brand tool, but seems to work), 55 lbs seems a bit loose .. the other side I tightened it w/ no measure, seems a bit tighter .. wanna get em perfected
when I do the main steering bushing dont wanna do it twice, coming down from steer box to a tie rod .. then another tie rod .. that boot needs replace (center link) .. same basic tie rod boots as the steering knuckle boots ? and same torque ?
when i got rid of old boot rubber, flushed tie rod end with new grease, then new boot .. seemed the proper thing to do, was black grease in there, nice & pink now
wish I had XJ only book
.. hope santa claus is listening

I've just always torqued to what the specs called for, maybe one more light nudge for good measure and left it at that. Whatever the boots compressed to is what I've left it at and never had any issues.

gotta do that left axle u-joint, didnt happen today, frozen axle nut. luckily the shop I just bought tires at, Impacted the nut off free, I left center cap off, theyre close to home, very nice freebie .. after breaking a ratchet adapter .. i let it be, just fixed tie rod boot
i think that pop is 1 of the 2 center link boots .. theyre toast .. the right 1 has been seeping grease since i lubed it, its lost alot of grease
are those standard tie rod boots? look like it .. on the torque issue .. maybe all of the tie rod boots were over tightened at install? rubber isnt 20 yrs old, but destroyed
that smaller pop may be axle u-joint .. it seems tight / ok, but old as right side, that side was wacked .. gettin swapped 2morrow
