Hello Everyone. I'm hopping to gain some insight here. I've owned 5 cherokees along the way. I'm down to 3. My 2001 project, My 2000 daily driver and my Son's 2000 which I rebuilt the engine on and lifted with 31" tires.
So here's where I need some help or insight.
I noticed my Son's 2000 classic was leaking transmission fluid to the point where the underside was coated. We pulled the tranny out AISIN 30-43LE.
The torque converter failed. The notched tube that drives the oil pump sheared and tore up the seal. We bought and installed a remanufactured TC from Advanced Auto, replaced the seal, pulled the pan off, installed a new filter and re installed the tranny hoping all would be well. It wasn’t. The TC would not lock up at any speed. Frustrated by the amount of work we put in and didn’t get the results we had hoped we took it to a pretty reputable shop and had them diagnose. They claimed it needed a new speed control sensor and an overdrive solenoid. They said that would fix the problem for a total of $900. We agreed and they did the work. It didn’t fix it. The TC still wouldn’t lock in. They ended just charging $200 for the diagnostic and ate the labor and parts. I was really grateful . They told me that the next step would be a complete transmission over haul at $2k. The shop manager knew we had done the initial work so he recommended that we just pick up a good used tranny and install ourselves.
I found a low mile tranny at a local yard. They had one out of a 1998 with 78kmi on it. When I went to look at it we discovered that it was pulled in 2001 from a wreck. I thought it was great. It had sat in a covered warehouse for 13yrs. Price was $300. The TC had surface rust but it and the tranny were full of oil so I thought it would be good.
Yesterday we took another shot at it. We pull his out, replaced the filter and front / rear seals on the new used tranny. We put the remanufactured TC in the new tranny and reinstalled (an all day event). We took it out and same problem… the Torque converter would not lock up. At 60 mph you could get the tachometer to bounce all over.
So now as you can imagine the frustration level is pegged. I’m thinking the remanufactured TC from Advanced auto was the problem all along. They sold me a defective unit???? How is that possible?
I’m tempted to pull it out and replace it with the TC that came with the used transmission but I don’t want to waste more time and effort.
The reman’d TC from Advanced auto is the common link. What else could be causing the TC to not lock?
Also, we noticed that the Cherokee has bad vibration at 25 to 40 MPH range. I’m thinking that we broke the motor mounts with all the jacking around we did…. More fun.
OK, so what are we missing? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

AW4s are pretty tough cookies to my knowledge. If I had to take a crack at it, I'd bet it has something to do with a computer/sensor. Tcase doesn't really have much to do with the transmission doing transmission things.
I can't say I'm a subject matter expert, I just hope someone else has something more to say.

Two transmissions and same problem. It's either a bad TC from Advanced or some other issue. I cant believe the new / reman'd TC would be bad. I found another thread where someone stated they had the same problem and discovered a bad Throttle Position sensor was at fault.
