Default torque converter alignment

So I just pulled the aw4 in my 1990 xj for some minor repair last week. Now the repair is done and I just re installed it yesterday. When I start the engine everything shakes like crazy. So I searched everywhere and the only thing I found that makes sense is that in 1995 and earlier jeeps the converter was not symmetrical and had to be bolted to the flex plate in one certain position. And of course I didn't mark it. Dose this sound correct to anyone. Or maybe it is just common knowledge that I didn't know.

That would be good info to no, because I just pulled my AW4 out of my 90.

Hopefully that is the problem and you can avoid the headache.

I have had two different AW4s out of different jeeps (89s). As long as the converter is in the front pump correctly it did not matter how it was bolted up to the flex plate. I felt lucky to finally get it bolted up the last time. If the bolt pattern on the flex plate lines up with the converter bolts then bolt it up and be done.

some people say it matters and some say it doesn't. I will be trying all 4 possible combinations tonight and will post my discovery. apparently there is a mark on the flex plate and a mark on the converter ( witch i cant see) that need to be lined up. any other opinions would be appreciated. thanks.

There is only one way to get it bolted up..

What i mean is if you have all the bolts in... it's right.

When you slid the trans in did it go fully to the bellhousing easily or did you have to draw it in with the bolts? If it was the latter your TC may not be fully seated into the trans oilpump and causing vibration.

Out of curiosity, what was the minor repair? Did you make sure the flexplate was not cracked?

It shouldn't make any difference which way you put it in..just spin the TC so it Lock's in the pump and you should be ok...Tj

so I pulled the trans last night because I thought my tc might not be full all the way. well it was but I think it may not have been set into the pump. so I made sure it was all the way in and put everything together and no shake! thank you everyone for your input and I confirm that it dose not matter how you bolt up the torque converter it will work.
