Default Too much tranny fluid!

Used 96 jeep I just bought had WAY too much tranny fluid in it. It shifts into Drive okay when cold, but after warming up it seems to jolt when shifting into R or D. Could there be any correlation between the two?

That jolt is normal, the tranny has a way of draining itself if it has too much fluid in it. I would suggest just putting the right amount of fluid into it and not worry about it unless it gives you something real to worry about.

That jolt is normal
What is the cause of it? I've never owned a vehicle that has done this.

Where does it go?

Definitely will do.

Well how much of a jolt are you talking about? Most cars make a bit of a jolt when going into gear because of the power that the gear puts out while in gear. Too much tranny fluid will often spill out through the breather, at least in my experience.

Well enough to give the feeling of some momentum, seems like the jeep wants to go forward by itself. This is accompanied by an audible creaking. Again, this is not very pronounced when first starting cold engine.

All the jeeps I have been in do the same thing, and it will go forward if you let off the break. There is a bit of power without stepping on the accelerator.

What is the idle speed. That being too high could cause the jolting you described.
Most automatic trans equiped vehicles will be able to move once in gear. The jolt may be from a higher than normal idle. They are designed to move at idle causing the driver to keep his foot on the brake while in gear, either forward or reverse.

I dont know the exact speed they are at other then very low. I know mine makes a noticeable jolt when going into D and R.

Not sure what my idle speed but that's a good point though. I will have to look into this.

Renix idle speed is 800 RPM don't know what the H.O. engines idle at but I would venture it is close to that.
