Ok so went out for a drive today and decided to make sure the 4L was working since i just bought the jeep (its a 2000 w. a NP242 equiped w. part time and full time as well as low range) anyway we ran it thru all gears full/part time and 4L no problems then it came time to put it back in 2 wheel drive so pulled down on the lever it moved into the 2high position but the T - case remained stuck in 4 wheel drive about 3 miles later it disengaged but im afraid to throw it in 4 wheel drive now. We think it may just be the fluid any other ideas or how we could have it checked
On a postive note I did pick up a copy of High-Proformance Jeep cherokee XJ builder's guide so i have began reading that.

It's not uncommon for it to take a bit for the t case to disengage. Especially if it has not been used much. I've found that if I accelerate then let off the gas after taking out of 4 low it will come out. I bet the more you use it the better it will behave. It will get better when you learn the "quirks" of that particular XJ, they all have them you just have to learn what she likes and dislikes!! Good luck!! Later!!

242s need a few feet to engage and dis-engage. Acceleration and then a sudden removal of power used to be the only way for mine but it has gotten much easier to get in and out of engagement now that she is used to being changed. I think mine had not been in anything but 2WD for years before I got it. Now it is a dream to put into or out of 4WD & 4Lo.

Are you putting it into neutral before you shift it into or out of Low? If your not that will make it alot harder to shift it and some times cause it to "lock" into low..

You know that the headlights have to be on and set to low beams before the switch gets any power! If that fails then it is fuse time before tracing the wiring.

Oh well brakes are easy enough so are belts..
