Default TJ Axles into 1993 XJ

These are YJ axles NOT TJ as the header say, I messed up. sorry

My stock 8.25 and Dana 30 HP have the 3.07 gears. Have a 5 speed and 31" tires, so it is REALLY geared high.....

Found a set of 87-95 YJ axles Dana 35 and Dana 30 with vacuum disconnect and 4.10's (what I am looking for) rear has a Lock Rite locker.

Sorry, thse are YJ axles NOT TJ messed that up and will try to chage it.

So I know the rear 35 isn't as good my 8.25 and the vacuum disconnect sucks. Which I would flat plate and install a solid axle with a Aussie or such locker in the front. Both axles are $500

By the time I get new carriers and gear sets plus labor for my 8.25 and 30 I am up to $2,000 with some lunch box lockers possibly if not more.

This is to get me by for awhile as I am not hitting the Rubicon or rock crawling daily, more mellow stuff though I was just on Black Bear Pass etc.

My plan is for Dana 44's when I find some.

Thanks for any insight. Jeff

YJ has leaf springs in the front. Sounds like a ton of work. I’m not a welder though.

I think you'd be better off looking for a set of axles from a 4-cyl XJ. They came with 4.10/4.11 axles and would be a straight bolt-in. I think that YJ rear axle is also going to be 5/8" narrower.

I wouldn't swap a Dana 35 into anything if I got one for free, the 8.25 is a far better axle, the front Dana 30 is the same as you have now but you will have to weld coil buckets, control arm, and track bar mounts on it to make it work. If your not going with tires larger than 35s your 8.25 and Dana 30 combo will be fine so I wouldn't worry about swapping to Dana 44s later. Just save yout money and regear what you have now and put some lunchbox lockers in, it will be far less work in the long run.

Pulled all the measurement off mine just now, and plan to go check them out. Looking for a short time use and then build out some 44's while they are on. I have all the Fab stuff so mounts and such are no issue.

5th gear is almost unusable, so looking for kinda short term low cost 4.10 swap. And these are a mile away.

Thanks! Jeff

They are YJ axles, so coil buckets etc are there.

I understand the Dana 35 is kinda crappy, the whole deal here is the ratio and the 8.25 will require a new carrier and gear set along with the front the same. Neither can go part a 3.73 or so.

I do not have the space to set back lash here so am looking for more a a complete short term solution and spent the money on 44"s in spring.

The 3.07 and 5 speed with 31's are pretty tall.

My friends have Centerforce clutches and one is going shortly. Just can't have the lift too long though.

Thanks Jeff

You don't have to change carriers on the 8.25 to swap gears, and YJs have leaf springs in the front so you will have to weld all the stuff I mentioned on to make the Dana 30 work, and you will have to cut the leaf springs perches off of the rear as well and weld them on the top since the YJ rear springs bolt under the axle.

Thanks!!!!!!!!

Looking at the photos I can see that the perchs ARE under the axle and that kills this thought right away. Thank You!

My research says a 3.07 carrier will not fit a 4.10 ring gear or anything over a 3.73 (?) or so.

Happy with the axles, just was looking for a reasonable way to get to a 4.10. the 3.07 makes 5th a down hill gear only, 4th on the highway is running a little high.

Thanks again I will keep on looking......

The Chrysler 8.25 has no carrier break, you can use the same carrier for any gear ratio, the Dana 30 does have a carrier break at 3.73.
