Default Tires!!!

So i need some new tires. Im looking for some new 31x10.50x15, and i commute 35 mins to school and work but i do my fair share of wheeling and im looking for some good all terrain tires. i was think about the goodyear duro drac, but there 708 bucks.... but i dont wanna get a cheap tire off line and have them ware fast and drive like crap. and being on a poor college kids budget its tempting to buy some online that are on sale. advice and opinions will be appreciated

I'm not happy with the Goodyear Wranglers on my XJ, they're wearing way to fast.
I've read good reviews of the Treadwrights and they're close to a 50k mile tire wear.

its not always "you get what you pay for". Mastercrafts for example, come off the same assembly line as coopers. Look at the price differences. Another example IMO, michelin. Not fond of them at all. Too much money for what you get.

If you see a lot of snow. Get something with a lot of siping.

Treadwear ratings are pretty accurate. Tire compound mileage is very predictable. Hard compounds wear well...soft compounds don't. Sports car tires are soft. Ferrari tires wear out in 6,000 miles...and cost $400 each.

Michelin Aquatreads are rated, for example, for 90,000 miles. I put a set on my wife's minivan and got 90,000 miles out of them. If you stick with GY, Michelin, and other major brands, you'll probably get what you paid for if you rotate and don't put the tires through any unusual wear conditions...like driving gravel roads all day delivering mail or spinning donuts.

I use Tirerack to review the brands and models and would not hesitate to buy from them except I've got a good Discount Tire shop locally that treats me well. They're advice might not be as reliable as the service but they stand behind the tire, never charge for anything like rotation, balance, fixing a flat, etc., and in my experience work hard to make sure you're happy.

i live in Michigan so snow is common. this is my first xj and it came with firestone m/t and i do to much highway driving for them, there annoying loud, vibrate the vehicle and wore pretty fast . but they were awesome in mud. i really leaning toward the grabblers. i had toyo a/t on my ranger b4 i bought my jeep and there were awesome in the snow. but i have fourwheele drive now so im not to worried about that. my buddy had the bfg a/t31s then lifted his xj more and put 33s goodyear duratracs and says there are nicer but there are also bigger. and so did the goodyear guy, he said he had the bfg on his wrangler and has the duro tracs on his wifes and he likes the durotracs.

I don't know about the aquatreads but all the michelins I've worked with had really soft rubber.

I live in Michigan also, I had Mastercraft courser MTs, and they did really good in the snow, road, rocks, mud, any trail, I was happy with them.

I agree. A lot of their tires are soft - performance tires especially. If it is soft, it will grip well but wear out fast. It is a trade-off you can't escape.

BTW, just about every single tire engineer and compounding guy in the American tire industry went to the same school: The University of Akron. They all know each other, too. The tire biz is weird. Lots of "secret formulas" and things like that.
