Default tire woes

so I need new tires and since my lift plans (3" BDS) have been put on hold for quite awhile, new tires with the lift are not an option so I'm trying to find out what tires are the biggest you can fit stock, I know this has been asked alot and that it varies vehicle to vehicle to some extent.

I have a 2001 sport on 235/75/15 and i have no idea how that relates to inches, this XJ sadly wont be seeing any offroading (aside from dirt roads and grassy trails) so flexing isnt an issue.

i got a friend who is running 30 stock he rubs at full lock but he got them under there. he also has no flex with it but if your not seeing any offroading then you might get away with it also.

Yep 30's will work but will rub onroad occasionally and definitely offroad..I'd look at something just a touch smaller then 30's..Realistically the tires you have on are the max you should run without rubbing at all..If you want to trim the fenders you could run 30's or 31's, depending on how much you trim.and you would need bump stops...

I have 30"s on mine and believe it to be stock and they dont rub at all, full lock or flexed... Just depends on how much your springs have sagged over the years.. or maybe a previous owner put a small (1") lift on it.. But from looking underneath it doesnt appear so.

thanks for the input, i think ill be staying all stock for a bit longer, I was just trying to see if I could kinda go halfway now rather than having to buy new tires again when I lift it ... another brainstorm, would a 3.75 or 4" backspaced wheel look out of pace on a stock rig? (still trying to do part of "the list" while the tires are off)

if you get 30's now, they will probably look good under a 3" as well. that way you'll get some clearance. i have 31's under my 4.5"

would it be a bad idea to just replace 1 set of tires? only the front ones are bad (alignment issue gave horribly uneven wear) the back ones still have quite a bit of tread on them. i was thinking that instead of buying 4 new tires i could buy 1 new one and use my unused spare as the other in the pair, does this make sense? i know that bc its a 4x4 that all 4 should be the same but would it be bad for the jeep if i just put the new ones on the back and the old back ones on the front until i had money for a lift and a completely new set up in teh summer?

yes that will work for now. buy two new ones cheap and put them in the back, take the back ones and put them up front and keep a good one for a spare. when you get enough money go ahead and order a lift and some better tires. you'll save in the long run.

if you are looking for some inexpenssive tires for the time being go to your local wam-mart. they have 237/75/15 goodyear wrangler radials on sale for 55 a piece. They will be at that price until january. its a decent tire for light off road use and for snow and gravel. I would not run it to hard the sidewalls are a little bit soft. But all in all for the price not a bad deal. And if you go that route then you won't have to use your spare. Also check to see if they have 30x9.50 uniroyal liberators in stock. The store i work at we have them on sale for 55 a piece as well so you could realistcally get a better tire that will suit your finished product needs for the same price. Just a thought

I was looking at tires at my local Wal-mart.. and the Liberators were $80 for the 235s and $118 for the 30"s... I didnt see the Goodyears to check the price.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but does this same info apply for a 94 sport running 225-75-15 currently? The fronts are junk, and the two rears are mismatched and not the same tread depth, so I want 4 cheap but half decent tires. It will probably never see "offroad" aside from maybe a grassy field or something, and lots of snow, since it is my DD/Winter Car.

http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.p...&nichtweiter=1 Thats what I have and $65 is not a bad price, they are pretty capible off road also. Here is a pic of them on my Jeep, with some MAJOR flexing going on.
