Default tire squeal at low speeds?

going through the taco bell drive-thru yesterday I heard what sounded like tire squeal as I turned left at about 5mph with the steering wheel all the way to the left

I found a large empty parking lot to try and replicate the sound, and it only appeared in 2WD at low speed with a pretty tight turn and lasted only for about a second, so 90 degree turns seem to produce it most
I tried it in 4FT but didn't hear it . . . or at least couldn't duplicate the sound
didn't try 4PT because I don't want to have to replace my TC

is this normal? is this sound I'm hearing actual tire squeal on the pavement, or some other squeak?

ya could be alignment, or just some kinds of pavement will do it. alignments are cheap, and good insurance. but might be just the pavement also.

Well without getting into a long discussion this is the effect of the u-joints in the front axle when put at an accute angle. Try the same with a couple of long extensions and a universal in the middle. The outside and inside of the universal are attempting to turn at different speeds and thus causes the sudden increase followed by a decrease in accelleration as the u-joint accellerates and decellerates while in a near bind. It is a function of Physics and I can't remember the term for right now. This is why we need SYE on our drive shafts and double cardan joints which cancel out the accelleration/decelleration on the rear driveshafts. HTH.

that would only be true if he had a spooled front end, and if that was the case i bet he wouldn't even make the turn at the taco bell drive through

As mudd says it means a locked front end but that is not exactly true. The axle needs to turn and it has the ability but when it is in a bind the axle is forced by the actions I described above and it is the tire which is the driving force and not the differential which is causing the squeal. The principal is still in play, it just does not need to be driven to work. either end of the equation is going to react the same.

Could be something simple as low tire pressure...
