Hi guys, i need some help choosing some new tires for my 2001. I have narrowed it down to either GT Radial Adventuro AT3 or Falken Rocky Mountain ATS. The GT Radials are 31s but are only $94 each, while the Falkens are 30s, but are $112 each. I am currently using stock suspension, so i am worried about fitting the 31s. It seems most people say 30 or above need a lift, but I currently have 30" BFGoodrich All-Terrains with no rubbing or bumping or any problems.

I looked up reviews on both tires and they both seem fine for my use, so it comes down to saving about 20 bucks each and having to take it real easy, or coughing up the extra and knowing it will be no problem.

 

oh and to help with suggestions, i go offroading maybe once a month, and its nothing too hard. mostly packed dirt with some sand, no climbing/rocks. maybe a little mud since monsoon season is starting. I will be taking a camping trip in a couple weeks, about half way up the mountain it becomes maintained dirt road, then unmaintained between the camp site and the lake. about the worst part if i remember from last year was some washboarding.

i could maybe afford a lift kit in a couple months, but would prefer to keep it under 3 inches so i wont have to worry about a sye.

 

Seems to me you answered your own question.... When you are out in the sticks, the last thing you want is to worry about being easy or bad things happen... Stuff happens as it is... No need to compound it!

I have 245/75/16s on my stock XJ right now and i dont take it off the road for fear of rubbing. If i have people or lots of cargo in the back, the back will rub over bumps or tight turns. The front driver likes to rub if its just me in it when i back up and turn the wheel to the right.

I myself would pay for tires that i know wont rub. It defeats the purpose of having 4wd if you cant take it off the road for fear of rubbing and ruining your tires if you hardly flex it at all.

I need new tires (im borrowing these ones and need to give the back) and im debating between getting 225/75s that came with it stock, or 235/75s that im afraid will limit my flexing offroad. They certainly shouldnt be as bad as what i have now, but i wonder if they are more restrictive than the stock options

 

The GTs look interesting but curious how they hold up in any type of mud and much with the narrow thread path of the center.

 

Well, i ended up getting falken wildpeaks (the same as rocky mountain) from sears today. And in a smaller size 😥. Went with 235/75 (bout an inch shorter) . I loved how the 30s looked and didnt have any issues with fit, but i decided to save more money for the camping trip instead. I think they were about 80 each, got out the door for 443 total. At least i know ill be able to use the jeep to full potential if needed.

It was hard to settle, but i knew it was the better choice. Im loving the new tires though. Granted, I've only been driving to and from work the last couple days, but they are so quiet and smooth. I love it. The BFGoodrichs that were on there were pretty worn out, but this is like a night and day difference

I have 235/75-15s (basically stock) on a 2" lift and I think they look fine. I know mine have gotten me through some off road mess without issue.
