Default Tire/MPG question

Probably a stupid questions that I should know the answer to but i don't

As you go up in tire size does the gas mileage get better or worse?

It should go down because your engine has to work harder to turn the extra weight of the tires. jmo.

A whole lot worse, I can get 17 (city) with my 31's, I get about 12 when I slap the 33's on it. Gears help some to deal with it.
