Default Tire / lift question

I am looking to do a small lift on my XJ here pretty soon and need some advice:

First of, I spoke to a guy thats willing to meet me within 20 miles of my house that has a set of used Maxxis Bighorns 31.10.50.15 w/ apprx 3k miles on them, he is doing a spring over on his Wrangler and wants to go bigger. He said he would take $400 for the tires as they are pretty much brand new. Good tires/deal?

I only want to go 3"s and am looking at RC and Rustys kits. Do 31"s look a little big with this small of lift? Should I just stick with a 30" tire?

Also, I was originally thinking of an AT tire as this is pretty much a commuter until I saw the Bighorns. Is there any noticabe difference in running a MT vs an AT for fuel mileage?

31's are fine with a 3 inch
if you dont wheel often, i would stick with an aggressive a/t

MT's that are a larger tire radius will have a lower fuel economy. I would advise getting another set of wheels (steel) and mounting the MT's on there. 3" lift should be fine for that size of tire, but expect rubbing on the control arms in turns and such.

So it doesnt sound like the tire deal is too good to pass up regardless?

Bighorns are good tires for sure.
If you get a 3" lift get the RC series 2 with new leaf packs.

Now the suggestion of getting some good AT's for DD is good but again costs money.. You will be fine driving the MT's..

It's not exactly a steal for those kind of tires, especially considering you could order a set of five M/T's delivered to your door from Treadwright.com for that same price. The only catch with the treadwrights is that if you air them down, you void the warranty.

For driving, the A/T's will make a lot more noise than the M/T's and probably wear down a little faster, but they will function just fine for a DD.
