well, you could probably fab up some kind of roof rack cheaper than buying one... you could put your tire plus any other gear you might have.

where in mass are you??? i live in mass and thats certainly not the law.. i dont know where you heard that but the actual lift law in MA/RI is it cannot be measured more than 36" from the ground to your front bumper...thats why alot of guys with 7-8" lift make their own bumpers, so they can legally drive it on the road. i think what clayton meant by the tire size wasnt the rim size(you said 17) i think he meant like 31 10.5, 32...etc etc.. im not trying to be a jerk im just curious to see what youre going to do. ive been thinking of fabbing something after my bumpers finished.

my wife grew up with the chief of police in my towns son. (n. attleboro) i asked the chief personally (mr. Gould) what the law was and he told me that it has to pass inspection. in order for it to pass inspection it cant be more than 36" from the ground to the bumper.(as previously stated) i also asked him about the doorless law with xjs. he said its the same thing as a wrangler, or the offroad jeeps, it is LEGAL as long as you have one (1) rearview mirror (windshield) and wear your seatbelt at all times in the state of MA/RI. maybe in your town, like alot of other peoples, they will give you problems but the chief told me if i ever get a ticket or anything for my doors off to give him a call and he will straighten it right out. so im not worried about anything lol
