Question Timkin rear axle bearing issue. Help please

Hi

I'm in the process of installing new Timkin axle bearings in my 8.25. The Timkin bearings I got from Autozone look different than the ones I took out.

Does anyone know if these are the correct bearings? And if so, how would I go about installing them. Is the seal looking part separable? Could I use a regular bearing/race installer or do I need a different special tool?

Photos courtesy of a NAXJA member with the same issue.

Any advice would be appreciated

TIA

Well I think I solved my own problem.

When you search for a rear wheel bearing on AZ's parts search, it brings up TRP1559TV which is a repair kit for a damaged axle with that being the only part they list.

But according to Timkins parts catalog, the bearing itself is listed as #6408. Take that number and run it at AZ and sure enough, it pulls up the part.

So I'll be returning the repair kit, and getting the regular bearing (along with some $$ back) .

looks like you figured it out.

about the tools, you will most certainly need a axle bearing puller and a slide hammer.

Thanks

I already had the old bearings and seals pulled. I did need the puller kit. Today I cleaned up the raceway of any little nicks and drove the new bearings in. I needed the installer for that but it seated them perfectly. Then I used a backing plate from a ball joint kit to drive in the seals. Next week will be installing the locker and maybe the next week throwing it under the ride.

All in all it was most excellent.

I actually got a set from Rockauto.com. They were pretty cool since it was a one piece bearing and seal kit. You have to clean the axle shaft further out to use them because the seal sits in a different spot than the originals. It also made installing the locker a little tougher as well. We had to hammer the axle to get it in far enough to get the C-clips in. The only thing I didn't like is that the rollers were smaller on these than the original version. I wound up swapping axles anyway and put the correct replacememnts in. Glad you found your fix.
