Default timing off. help!!

I had a 95 zj back a few weeks ago, and it started leaking tranny fluid so me and dad tried fixing the problem, but couldn't so we got an xj with a blown motor, the zj ran great, never had and problems, so we had to switch distributors. We did and got it in and it was out of time so we put the crank 0 and put the rotor in the 4 o'clock position, and its still out of time, I need help!

I'm confused, you fixed the blown motor by installing a distributor?

Which vehicle are we working on?

The distributor is correctly installed when:

•rotor is pointed at 3 o'clock position (2.5L engine), or at 5 o'clock position (4.0L engine)
•plastic alignment pin (or pin punch tool) is still installed to distributor.
•number 1 cylinder piston is set at top dead center (TDC) (compression stroke)
•centerline of slot at base of distributor is aligned to centerline of distributor holddown bolt hole on engine. In this position, the holddown bolt should easily pass through slot and into engine.
No adjustments are necessary. Proceed to next step.

X2^ #1 at 5:00, viewed from the side for the 4.0. I bunch of the diagrams both in the books, and online are just plain wrong. 153624, clockwise btw.

Here's one>> http://ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Ind...tor&id=1357018
