oops i forgot its an inline 6
its been a long day
when i pulled the head off the engine there was a bent valve and a ding on the surface of the piston
my friend said it could have been the timing chain
now that the head is resurfaced and the valves all fixed and redone
i just want to check everything that could have caused this

I'm not a pro, but I would guess this is possible. If a bad timing belt can result in bent valve goodness, I imagine a very, very loose timing chain/guides can result in what you're describing. Can you hear it slapping loosely on the valve cover when you're at idle?

In that case, it'd be worth checking the chain and the guides.

Sometimes if you overrev an engine the springs will not be able to close the valve fast enough. This is known as valve floating. Also improperly torqued or adjusted rocker arms or stuck lifters can cause this.
