Default Thunk from the back?

87 Wagoneer limited with the inline six gives a random thunk from the back near the hatch when accelerating at a fast pace and or suddenly letting off the throttle

Could be a u-joint. Any of them could be bad, not necessarily from the rear.

Did the 87 have a slip yoke driveshaft? If so, it needs to be greased. At least, that was the problem on my 98. Easy fix if that's the case.

Greg
They did have a slip yoke
Easy check there
I would also check ujoints and trans mount
Go ahead and check motor mounts as well while your at it

I had a bad motor mount and for some reason when it made a noise it sounded like it was in the cargo area.
Good luck

I think I should also mention that there is on occasional vibration on the passenger side front of the jeep when i go above 55 mph but the tires are brand new and from what i see the suspension parts are in relatively good shape. As far as the mounts I am gonna take her to a shop today and put her on a lift and post some pics.

Check the clearance between your exhaust and the crossmember. You should be able to put your thumb between them

Already done all the usual things regarding this. Replaced trans and engine mounts, tht decreased the clunk for 80%, it came back, tightended the transmount bolts, came back again, was my crossmember coming loose on one side, greased the slipyoke, checked the U-joint and leafsrping U-bolts,....and now its increasing again....might regrease the slip againm although that didnt change anything actually.
But I'm not here to hijack the OP's thread, just reading along to see if any new insights available...

Dumb *** question.. what kind of grease do you use and how often do you have to grease them?

I used lithium NLG2 grease I think, just a general automotive high pressure etc grease. But I've come across some that use antiseize...might be an idea for next time. There is not a maintenance interval, for some greasing fixed it, for me it did not...
