thumping noise when turning in 4 wheel drive

thumping noise when turning in 4 wheel drive
Hello;
Just picked up a 90 Cherokee and was trying out the 4 wheel drive. When I turn the wheel hard to the left or right there is a thumping noise coming from the front end. If I go straight there is no noise and the 4 wheel seems to be working fine. Any idea what this is?

That's drive line bind. 4WD is for use only on slick surfaces like mud or ice/snow. Proper operation is covered in the owners manual.
