Thump while starting.
I'm pretty sure that my starter is starting to go out on me. Every once in a while when I try to start the Jeep it will almost start, make a couple thumps like its refusing to start. If I try to start it a second time it starts without a problem.
Just wanted to see if I am right about that being the problem.

Before you go and throw money at it.
Check your cables.
Often times they loosen up ever so slightly and allow oil and dirt into the contact area.
Pull the POS terminal and go underneath with a wrench and tighten all the connections at the starter...ALL of them.
Also, check the tightness of the starter itself.
After all of that, if the problem still occurs, reach into your pocket and throw some money at it.
Its an XJ, they like when you do that.
