My 98 xj started squealing a lot recently while I was driving it. I haven't driven it since, so as to not damage it any further. Based on other posts and research, it sounds like the throw out bearings might be the problem. I am 16 and have only had this car for a year, so needless to say I don't know much about it yet. Could anyone give me any pointers on what the process will look like, and the time commitment?

 

Not nearly enough info at this point,,all kinds of things can squeal. So, to begin.

1) it's a throw out bearing
not bearings.
2 when does it squeal? only when you push in the clutch or some other time, if so. when ?
3 does the clutch have the correct free play?

......to answer your other question IF it's the throw out bearing you need to take out the transmission. I'm hoping it's just a belt or a bearing on something in the engine compartment.

It started off as only squealing when the clutch was engaged, but I think it got worse in the time it took me to get home, and just kinda squeals most of the time now. When I went to start it the next day, it was very loud. It could have partly been the recent tempurature change where it got cooler by like 20 degrees, but I don't think that would be the entire problem.

 

I forgot to say but it sounds almost like it's wheezing when you start it.
