So I Just bought a 1989 jeep xj and thr gas pedal doesn't seem to be as high as it should be. I pulled all the rug out and it's still low I have to burry it to get it to shift up going up hill. Is there any way to adjust the slack and make it raise the pedal?

Welcome to CF. Check this, then adjust yours. >->https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/free-quick-fix-41821/
I was having the same issue that you're have now, being that I had to really put the pestle to the metal when I wanted my XJ to downshift while going up a hill. I did a quick search and found a thread on another forum and did it with a significant difference in the way my XJ runs!! Shifts are a lot cleaner and seem more "on time". This literally took less than 8 seconds. So do it!
1. With the Jeep in Park and turned off, open the hood.
2. Your throttle cable leads to a bracket, which has a half-moon shaped plastic button. Push it and hold it down.
3. With your other hand slide the plastic sleeve that goes over your throttle cable back up into the bracket with the button.
4. Release button and open thottle all the way. That plastic sleeve you stuffed back into the adjuster will come out a little and click into place.
5. BOOM!! you're done.
