Default Throttle body cleaning

Hey guys im new to this forum, long time member of jeepforum though. Quick question, I cleaned my 96 Cherokee's throttle body today and changed the air filter. It wasn't stumbling or anything, the RPMs were a little low for my taste though (running around 750 at idle). Anyway i took everything apart, i left the throttle body on and just cleaned it with carb cleaner, with the engine off. My question is should the engine have been on while it was cleaned? Just wondering i've seen it done both ways but ive only seen it done with the engine running on a cherokee. So far the engine is running the same, so no problems to be seen, Its running as strong as ever. But should i have cleaned it with the engine on? (Ill definitly take the whole thing off next time).

I use an old tooth brush to scrub the grunge off while spraying with throttle body cleaner.

Never use carb cleaner on a throttle body. Use only throttle body cleaner. The throttle plate is coated with a finish that can be damaged by carb cleaners (Gumout)...no repair is possible.

I open the throttle plate and scrub the body and plate with a tooth brush (make sure you get the back side of the plate, that where a lot of gunk builds up) and throttle body cleaner, then wipe it down with clean paper towels.

Carb tune-up spray works wonders if you let it soak.

Its easier to unhook throttle cables and 2 plugs and 4 screws and clean it outside of the jeep. IAC can than be removed and cleaned. And remember to pick up a gasket just Incase.
