Default thinking of a turbo setup for my xj

I think I'm going to make a turbo setup using a small mitsu turbo for now. Anyone done their own. What is required for this or can I just do 5.0 injectors an slap a turbo on?

I dont know what your definition of "slap" is, but its not exactly a weekend project.

but for starters, i hope youre good at welding, because youre going to have to custom fab an exhaust manifold to accept the turbo. after that youll need a custom intake and a new exhaust downpipe, that will mate to the turbo. i doubt youll be able to run more than 8 psi.

for fuel youll need more than mustang injectors. those atleast, and a custom tuned ecm. depending on how much power you plan on making, a beefed up transfer case and rear end.

you wont really see any benefit offroad with a turbo because of spool up time, unless youre into jeepspeed stuff. horrible for rockcrawling, and the fluctuating whistling sound might give you a headache.

this is barely the tip of the iceberg.

I think you'd need a GT30R at least.. I had one on an R32 ans was close to 450 hp, but that was a 3.2litre..

pick up Maximum Boost by Corky Bell and get reading

Oh, and after that experience, sure the power was amazing, 170+ on the straights, and 12.3 1/4 mile.. but for a DD I would have gone NA instead.. FI is a big headache no matter what..

friend and I did a turbo on a 93 f150 w/ the 300, it was a low output turbo from a volvo or something. If you get even a flux core wire welder for like $200ish it will work great if you clean off rust before welding. We scored a descent one from menards. I would guess it picked up like 70-90hp which was nice and at the same time did a flowmaster. Be prepared for like 10 trips to the exhaust section of the auto parts store.

A small Mitsu turbo would spool up quick on the 4.0L, giving good low-rpm boost, but could cause problems such as high EGT's on the larger engine IMO.
You can't just "slap on" a turbo and expect power without problems. Trust me. There's a fine line between feeling the rush of boost and the suddenness of an engine letting go.
Kinda' like flushing money down the toilet if you don't do it right. IMO
I'd suggest against it.

i wouldn't do the turbo for offroading. I would think more about stroker motor build, or motor swap. There's a whole lotta work that goes along with putting a turbo on a car. It would easier if there was a big company out there making kits for you, but doing it up from scratch takes someone with a good automotive background and the money to make mistakes.

omg gt30r would be silly.

even 8-9 pounds with a crappy turbo is noticeable.. guy in our club did that with a no-name turbo on his XJ and it worked well, another is still running a turbo 4.0 YJ.

what turbo did you have in mind? 16G?

oh and to answer other questions, after a manifold+exhuast and injectors of course, all you really need is an adjustable MAP and a standalone AFC

A Mitsi TD05H with one of the 16G wheels would probably work okish A TD04 would be too small. A TD05H would spool fast and probably be done by 4000rpm on the 4.0 six. But I would think it could get you to at least 250hp and a bunch more torque.

The issue is not really installing the thing, it's tuning it. you would need some kind of programmable ecu to control the fuel and spark. and then somone who know what they are doing to set it up. Has anyone here done a megaquirt ECU on their XJ?

Don't forget an intercooler, there should be plenty of space for one.
With an all iron engine and 4.0 to play with you should be set for some big power. Turbos are pretty good at ramming charge in past inneficient old heads!

go for it.. do you have any back ground with turbos ? and fab tools and parts ? this wont be exaclly cheap... but wont brake the bank..but here is the main problem... see a turbo shoves air in... now this will be alot more air then your fuel system is going to supply at stock.....and most turbos go on motors made for them aka low compression for starters...if you go out and get all wild and crazy and start boosting ... and she runs lean... in about 2 seconds you will melt a piston...so you will need to make sure you have all the bases coverd... or it will be alot of funn for a very short time.... So if you are living on budget and dont have spare money JUST INCASE... dont do it...If you are willing to make sure you do it right... as in upgrade fuel system and get a wideband AFR setup to monitor... and you will prob need a MAP off a turbo TA... and maybe even a stand alone computer.. if you really want it RIGHT...If you dont monitor fuel AFR it will be hit or miss... you will have to run it pig rich to be on safe side.. But hey.. if you going to do it.. just post a crap load of pics ... and take all the neg coments to heart and read what people might have to sujest... you prob can pull it off.. :} hell they put turbos on lawmowers now for chits and giggles... im sure a jeep cant be to hard...
