I'll jump into the guilty pool.

The nicest rattle can pain job I've seen was primer gray under clear coat.

It came out looking like a satin ribbon. Very eye catching and very impressive.

I removed and painted my hood (96). The match was pretty good. Got the paint from Automotive Touchup based on the color code on my VIN plate. I used an HVLP gravity gun. Rattle cans just can't get an even coat laid down - especially with metallic finishes - because the overlap is so close on each pass and leaves a streaked appearance. I know. I tried that route first thinking I could make it work. So, I took it all down with 800 grit and started over with the gun and got it right. I applied three color coats and 4 clear coats. After a day drying I hand rubbed it out starting with 3600 grit through successive grits until finishing with 12000 grit Micro-Mesh surface finishing cloths. I use them to restore optically clear plexiglass transparencies on general aviation airplanes. Then I lightly buffed it with a 6-inch orbital buffer and compound. I will be moving to my roof next. It's a mess. But, going at it piece-meal I'll get it done before long.

You just told an uncomfortable truth. A friend of mine did gave his jeep to a newsier so he could drive it for a while. And let’s say that things didn’t end up well.
