Kick Down cable shouldnt have any bind issues. Id check The TPS for sure. Ive cured that same problem in my 87 with a new TPS.

hook it up to diagnose it via ECU and the TPS checked out good. 14.1

fluid looks good, smells good, and is at proper level.

took it for a drive and tried shifting manually....its not getting second gear. it is reving up to higher RPM's and grabbing 3rd. which also explains the hard shift. we put it in 1/2 and it will not shift into 2nd at all.

so it seams 2nd gear is gone.

didnt mess with the cable as I am having issues getting to 2nd period. either up or down.

if it was having an issue downshifting only i could see the point to check/change the cable. but it will not shift into 2nd gear at all.

Ill try the cable if the rain calms down. lol

2 more ?'s

1. how much does the AW4 weigh?
2. what years will interchange with my '96?

I read:
In 1996, the AW4 transmission added a front input speed sensor and the rear speed sensor changed from a 1-pulse/rev reed sensor to a 4-pulse/rev magnetic sensor. For this reason, if you are planning a swap you should try to keep the same year wiring harness and computer.
so will an older AW4 work or not?

Im also calling to get prices for rebuild.

im having basically the same issue with my 96 XJ. i am the 3rd owner and just got it 2 months ago. shifting is really rough, likes to hold high RPM, and sometimes it will flip flop between gears when i accelerate. i hope i dont need to re-build it. all data shows 2500$ for rebuild, thats more then what i spent on the jeep itself.
