What temp and brand thermostat does anyone recommend? I will be installing a new water pump and want to do the thermostat at the same time.
Just replaced mine yesterday. I used a Stant "Superstant" 195 degree from Advance Auto. I believe 195 is what came from the factory. Of course my Jeep still runs hot, even after replacing the water pump, thermostat, temperature gauge sensor and radiator cap. I'm just going through the list, starting with the least expensive items first.
Good luck!

Good luck!
I checked NAPA and Advance auto thermostats several times. Napa thermostats open twice more than Stunt from Advance.
I spent 2 days diagnising Corvette overheating. Problem was new thermostat from advance auto.

I only use Mopar 195 degree stats in the 4.0
I have had mixed (poor) luck with many aftermarket stats. Never once had any issue with a genuine Mopar stat and they are about the same price.

I agree with tjwalker. I use the Mopar thermostat.
The OEM part number for a 195* F thermostat for the '94-'96 XJ is 83501426.
FYI: a 180* F thermostat was offered in '94-'96 for 'severe use'. Part number 52028446.
Here's what a Mopar thermostat looks like. Note the air bleed valve.
Note: This thermostat is for a 2000 Chrysler T&C but the XJ thermostat looks the same.
