Default There's a goose under my jeep...

Sounds like a flock of geese are under the front drivers side of the jeep. It makes this sound when I hit about 30mph. Goes away when slowing down. I'm leaning towards an axle u-joint as I was in 2wd...any thoughts? Thanks.

Next time I head out I will try, not sure I can get a good recording as its not too loud. I left the house today and heard it echoing off of a fence along the road. I'll try though.

Do you still have one of those POS fabric-like splash shields under your engine? Those things are a useless artifact like the human Appendix. If you have one, chit can it.

Could be the cv joint in your front drive shaft.

No slash shield under the engine. I don't think it could be a u-joint on the front drive shaft as I was in 2wd. Its definitely coming from the front driver side. Looks like the axle u-joints havent been changed in a while, if ever...186,000 miles, ive only put a couple hundred on it since i bought in october. I tried hitting the brakes too see if they were making noise as I just replaced the rotors and pads last month but the noise didnt stop.

If it was real geese, I was going to tell you to run them off ASAP. A guy I work with told me this epic story about being at a family reunion once when a flock of geese landed in the field where the cars were parked and they went underneath the cars and started ripping wires loose. I lol'd.

yup, aka angry sparrows.

i replaced the u-joints on each side of the center ball and just regreased that ball and all is good again. but you can buy the center ball/yoke, very easy to replace.

Well I went out and bought some new axle u-joints. Going to try and replace them tonight and go from there. A new set of u-joints cant hurt, even if they're not the problem. With 186,000 miles, I dont mind throwing parts at it.

BTW, I just realized that I had a jackass moment. I kept thinking that because I wasnt in 4wd that the front driveshaft shouldnt be moving. Then I kicked myself in the *** when I remembered that these dont have locking hubs....

Well, I replaced the drivers side axle u-joint and I'm still hearing the squeal/whine/goose noise. Going to check the front driveshaft u-joints tomorrow. Anybody know what sound a bad hub might make when its on its way out...its been several years since I last dealt with a bad hub. The whining sound still develops around 30mph, tried turning the wheel back and forth trying to listen for a change in pitch but I just couldn't tell. Thanks for the replies.

check both front and rear driveshafts u joints, my tj rear d/s makes those noises when the u joints need gease.

pull the front drive shaft and take it for a ride. you should know right away if the noise is gone.

I bet it's the unit bearing causing the problem.
